When Andy and Andrea Baker decided to move to Bolivia over ten years ago to begin Word Made Flesh Bolivia, I don’t know that they went in with the thought of countless lives being changed. I think they went in with obedience to God’s calling on their lives. A calling to live incarnationally among the poor here in El Alto, Bolivia. To minister to and offer light to women who are stuck in the horrific nightmare of the prostitution industry.
I was sitting in the chapel of their founded ministry site thinking about this very thing when it occurred to me just how much of a butterfly effect a single person can have when they listen for God’s voice in their life.
Twelve women from F squad have spent the last two weeks doing whatever kind of project that WMF Bolivia has needed done to benefit their ministry. One particular opportunity was to help with Vacaciones Bible Escuela, where we were able to hang out with some local kids, all of whom have mothers who, at one point, were in prostitution. One boy that I especially bonded with was little two year old “Alex” whose mom works in the Suti Sana workshop of WMF Bolivia, where she now makes handbags and purses for a living.
Because Andy and Andrea Baker listend to their calling from God, Alex’s mother was offered a new kind of hope in Jesus and a new way of life, and as a direct result Alex will grow up in a different environment than before. And because I know their story, and have heard the stories of redemption in Alex’s mom’s life, it inspires me to also listen to God’s call on my life.
We’ll never know who we’re going to effect just by saying yes, nor will we ever grasp the power of that one syllable word when it’s in response to God calling us out of our comfort zone. But because of it, lives will be changed.
Forever and ever, lives will be changed.
