In case you haven’t noticed, the
World Race is a crazy adventure. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t say to somebody out loud, “Yes… this is our life”. For instance… it rained so much yesterday that today in Cambodia just to get
into church I had to take off my shoes, hike up my skirt and wade through a
muddy pond of drain water. I realize this is not a normal Sunday morning
routine, but this IS my life!
Here
is my personal version of “You know you’re a World Racer when…” with a couple add-ins from fellow Racers. J
YOU KNOW YOU’RE A WORLD RACER WHEN…
1. Your pockets are full of sugar packets that
you “borrowed” from the last restaurant you ate at
2. You meticulously scrub out the ziploc bags you
have been reusing for the past six months
3. You’ve stopped counting how many days it’s
been since you showered… only because you’ve switched over to weeks instead
4. You feel like it’s Christmas morning when an
airline gives you complimentary items such toothpaste and socks
5. You know that Febreeze covers over a multitude
of sins
6. Your credit card company has cancelled your
account because they insist your identity has been stolen by someone in 11
different countries
7. You have eaten rice every day for at least 45
days in a row and can’t remember what a hamburger tastes like
8. You have 6 or more forms of currency in your
wallet at any given time
9. Bodily functions and bowel movements have
somehow become a normal topic of your dinner conversations
10. You notice that suddenly everyone around you
has dreads, tattoos, and piercings they didn’t have when you met them
11. You know the formula: running water + soap +
paper towels= extreme luxury
12. You make your own salad dressing from free
packets of tomato sauce, vinegar, and salt you find at the deli counter
13. Your toe nail polish has been completely
removed after spraying your feet with your 100% DEET bug spray
14. You have walked at least 2 hours each way in
the hot African sun for ice cream, chocolate, or internet
15. You’ve sat on someone’s lap you don’t even
know in a bus crammed with 25 more people than the legal limit
16. You snag full toilet paper rolls from the public
bathroom and justify it by thinking ‘hey, I could potentially have used that
much in one sitting anyway’!
17. You’ve had to run and jump on a moving train
with a 40 lb. pack on your back
18. You plans for the weekend include things like
shark diving, white water rafting, or bungee jumping
19. You’ve woken up in bed and couldn’t remember
what country you were in
20. You’ve seen people carry things on their head
that a forklift couldn’t handle
21. The word ‘feedback’ has become a verb in your
vocabulary…like, “Dude, you totally just got feed-backed!”
22. You can fall asleep on the floor of a train or
bus station like you were in your own bed
23. You’ve haggled with a vendor for 10 minutes,
only to realize you are trying to talk him down the equivalent of 10 cents
24. You’ve ever made a casserole with a terrible mix of
everything in the fridge just to use up your leftovers
25. You can make 20 different outfits out of 4 pieces
of clothing
26. You ‘call out sick’ and it’s not because of a
common cold… it’s because of malaria or typhoid
27. You look at old pictures of yourself on
Facebook just to remember how you used to dress
28. You see a
rat or cockroach scurrying through a house, yet you carry on as if it were
completely normal
29. You get excited when you find a hand dryer in
a public bathroom so dry your hair and clothes after washing them in the sink
30. You cram 6 people
into an ATM booth because it actually has air-conditioning
31. You get
up in the night to go to the bathroom you’ve have to defend yourself from
mosquitoes, frogs, and pouring rain, as well as find a good place to squat in
the mud
32. Traveling on a
bus for 3 days straight is somehow normal to you
33. You
get more excited about the free clothing table at Squad Debrief than shopping
at the mall
34. Your
friends from home can’t remember the last time they had diarrhea and you can’t
remember the last you didn’t
35. You
finally decide to shave your legs after a few weeks and you shave off more dirt
than hair
36. The first
thing you do when you get into a country is ask if the water is safe to drink
and how much a jar of peanut butter costs
37. Your clean
outfit is the one that has only been worn 4 times that week
38. You have
so many bug bites your team mates are starting to wonder if you have a skin disease
39. You have
more adventure in one day than you usually have in an entire year back home
40. God has
taken you places and shown you things around the world you would have never
imagined possible!
I will leave you with a quick video of our squad leaving Thailand and entering Cambodia. We got to hike a few miles across the border in 100 degree heat…never a dull moment!
