Buddha. He’s big. He’s fat. His eyes are partially closed. I guess that’s because he’s enlightened. My eyes aren’t partially closed.
We went to the Big Buddha yesterday. On the drive, Amanda and Mark told the teams that the best thing about the statue is that it was built on the top of a mountain. The Thais built the statue so that the Buddha could protect the island from tsunamis and other storms. They also told us that the greatest part about it being on the mountain was the views. They said that every time they’ve been there and watched people come up the stairs, even thought they are looking directly at the Big Buddha, they turn around and look at CREATION first! It was crazy. This statue is huge. 147 feet tall to be exact and cost just over one-million dollars to construct.

They were right! I sat at the top for 20 minutes just watching people come up the stairs and walk straight for the railings to admire the views. To admire what God has created. The views were incredible. It was a little foggy and hazy and the views were still incredible. I am jealous of the Big Buddha’s life on top of the mountain.

It is crazy to think that people think this statue will protect them from storms. It is crazy that this whole statue has been made from marble! It is crazy that people drop money in to offering plates and do “good deeds” so that the gods will be pleased with them.
I couldn’t help but praying that this statue would fall down or be destroyed in the next storm. I prayed that then maybe the people would begin searching for the real, true God, since their gods had failed them. I prayed that this idol would become worthless in their minds and they would continue to walk up the stairs and look at creation first.
