Erin, Tess, Travis and I spent the last two days we had in Kisumu with Holly – Tess’ friend from back home.  Holly had been to Kenya many times and finally decided to move to Kenya when an amazing man of God, Fred, knew God was telling him that Holly was the woman he was supposed to marry.  Their story is inspiring and if you ever get the chance to hear it, take advantage of that chance.

Holly and Fred run a ministry called the Good News Community Center.  They focus on working with Luo people that are living in poverty outside of Kisumu.  The Luo tribe is the third largest population group in Kenya, making up about 13% of the population.  Holly and Fred have worked hard in one specific community where they have built a community center.  The community center functions as a pre-school, church, sewing school, and widow support group.  It’s quite amazing the influence that they’ve had in this community in such a short time.  They also have built some houses in the community and started goat farming for food and milk.

Holly and Fred are in the process of adopting Fred’s youngest sister, Lucy.  She’s a little girl full of life and joy.  She doesn’t know a whole lot of English yet, but she was a blast to hang out with for two days.

I’m excited for the possibility of sending future World Racers to work with Holly and Fred. It’s so encouraging to see the work of long-term missionaries have a lasting effect on communities and that’s exactly what the Good News Community Center is doing.
