12. In mijn hoofd is het een soep wat talen betreft. Ik begin soms in het Nederlands tegen teamgenoten of typ berichten in het Engels naar Belgen. Het Frans erbij maakt het nog leuker.
In my head it’s a mix of languages. Sometimes I start to talk in Dutch to my teammates or I type messages in English to Belgians. Adding French to the mix made it even more fun!
13. Het is super om Frans te praten met de lokale bevolking. Of te volgen wat ze zeggen zonder dat ze weten dat ge hun verstaat. Creool is zo cool, bv. chaque in het frans is chak in Creool. Simpeler en to the point, net zoals al de rest hier.
It was great to be able to talk in French with the locals. Or to know what they say without them knowing you can actually follow the conversation. Creool is so cool, for example chaque in French is chak in Creool. More simple and to the point, just like everything else here.
14. Haïtianen weten beter waar België ligt dan Amerikanen. Stromae? Allemaal grote fan!! Papaoutai is de favoriet.
Haitians know better where Belgium is at than Americans. Stromae? They’re all fan! Papaoutai is their favorite song.
15. Een van de medewerkers van Mission of Hope heeft haren geknipt! Eerst heeft iemand van m’n Squad geprobeerd, maar zonder de tondeuse, dus het normaal korte gedeelte was nog steeds ‘lang’. De 2e keer ging de tondeuse erin en aah wat een opluchting!!
One girl on mission of hope’s staff gave me a haircut! First someone of my squad tried, but without clippers, so the short part was still ‘long’. The second time she did use clippers and oh it feels good!
16. Als we werk doen, de stad in gaan,.. Ik heb zo goed als altijd mijn teeva’s aan. Mijn voeten zijn ondertussen gebruind in een mooi patroon.
If we’re working, go into villages,.. I’m always wearing my teevas. My feet do have a nice pattern on them because of how my feet tanned.
17. Thuis wordt ik zo goed als nooit wakker in het midden van de nacht. Hier slaap ik zo goed als nooit door. Met veel meisjes in een kleine kamer of stapelbed slapen is niet gemakkelijk.
At home I almost never wake up in the middle of the night. Here, I almost never sleep through the night. It’s not that easy to sleep with a lot of girls in one room or in bunk beds.
18. Twee weken geleden ben ik meter geworden van Levi Anthonissen! Het was geweldig nieuws om te horen dat alles goed was gegaan!
Two weeks ago I became aunt and godmother of Levi Anthonissen! It was great news to here everything went well!
19. Tot nu toe heb ik nog geen heimwee gehad. Ik mis thuis wel en het leventje dat ik had, maar vaak denk ik: wow, hoe geweldig is het dat ik hier kan zijn.
Up until now I haven’t been homesick. I do miss home and the life I had, but then I think: wow, how great is it that I get to be here!
20. Ik heb de chance om tot nu toe nog niet ziek te zijn geweest. Dit is een uitzondering, want zo goed als iedereen heeft wel iets gehad. Kelly van mijn team heeft afgelopen maand tegen parasieten gevochten, er zijn er met bacteriële infecties, de verwachte buikproblemen,..
I’ve been lucky to not be sick so far. This is an exception, cause almost everyone had something happen to them. Kelly, one of the girls on my team had to fight against parasites last month. People got bacterial infections, the expected stomach issues,..
21. Mijn voorlaatste punt is dat foto’s niet overbrengen wat ik met mijn ogen zie. En.. Ik let hier niet echt op hoe dat ik eruit zie. Schmink is voor speciale momenten, kleren moeten vooral makkelijk zijn. Ik ben al blij als ik propere kleren heb, dus of het allemaal samen past is meestal geen prioriteit. Dus alle foto’s op fb waarbij ge denkt, hoe ziet ze nu weer uit? Geloof me, dat denk ik vaak zelf ook.
My second to last point is that pictures don’t do justice to what I see with my eyes. And… I don’t really care what I look like here. Makeup is for special occasions, clothes have to be easy. I’m already very happy of the clothes I’m putting on are clean, so if they match isn’t a priority. So when you look at fb pics and think, oh boy, what does she look like? No worries, I’m probably thinking the same thing.
22. Philippians 3: 12-14
I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out of Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward – to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.
Ik ben zo dankbaar voor de tijd die God mij gegeven heeft om dichter naar Hem toe te groeien gedurende deze 11 maanden. Ik leer zoveel bij elke dag en ervaar Zijn aanwezigheid op nieuwe manieren. Dat alleen al maakt deze reis zo de moeite!
I’m so thankful for the time God has given me to grow closer to Him in these 11 months. Every day I learn so much and I get to experience His presence in new ways! That already makes this trip worthwhile!
Voila, een beetje meer info. Ondertussen is de eerste week van maand 3 voorbij en ben ik in Costa Rica op een boerderij in de jungle. Maar meer over dat in de volgende blog!
