Our first week of ministry on the World Race was a success!

Every week this month we take an hour tuk-tuk ride out to the small village of Po Pheyl and working with our hosts, Deb and Roger, who have started up a community outreach there called Life and Light Ministry.

Here’s what a typical day looks like:

5:30am: Wake up… not because of my alarm, but because there’s usually a pesky little rooster crowing in my ear

5:30:30am (30 seconds after waking): Chug luke-warm coffee (kidding…sort of)

6:30am: Help Bon Sapon (one of the Cambodian volunteers) prepare breakfast

7-ish: Eat breakfast with our ministry contacts, the Cambodian volunteers, and some kids who live there as well

9:30am: Bible study with the church members

11:30-ish: Lunch… every meal here is amazing!

1:30pm: English lessons with about 20 kids from ages 6 to 14

3:00pm: One on one English lessons with one of the Cambodian lady volunteers, Bon Sapone.

5:30pm: Teach a women’s bible study, which I really enjoy!

7-ish: Dinner

8-ish: Team time with the 6 other world racers. This usually lasts longer than expected. We give each other feedback, pray as a team, and share stories with one another… some serious, some not so serious J

Other tasks:

Hygiene day with the kids… wash lice out of their hair and clip their nails.

Feeding day – A day where the ministry provides the village kids with lunch. This is the only healthy meal that some of them will get all week.

The guys helped build a chicken house.

There are usually always a few kids hanging around the center so our free time is sometimes spent playing games with them.

Tuesdays Heather, an American missionary who lives in town, comes to teach an art class. Last week the kids painted the well.

Some random highlights:

Saw some strange creatures… a gigantic centipede, a three legged spider (poor guy), a scorpion, millions of huge fire ants that really hurt when they bite, and a gigantic worm that was definitely over a foot long.

Was able to pray as a team for one lady who recently became a Christian – just about a month ago. She has been having terrible nightmares, but has now stopped having them!

Mastered the squatty potty and the bucket showers!
