Yup those phrases of uncertainty describe our time in Thailand better than I’d like to admit. The primary ministry was to paint a mural in the front of the church, 20 feet up the way and not just any picture – the last supper! After realizing that none of us were even close to skilled enough to complete such a task, the church assigned us a new task. Now this new task was a smaller, more simple mural that was to be painted on the stairwell going up to the church. Now, I say us, but Hailey is the one who drew, gridded and shaded the mural – kind of hard for more than one person to work on at a time.
The rest of us waited around for the pastor to find work for us to do. Since they are building a new church there were small construction jobs we could help out with; little things to make it easier for the professionals doing all the other work 🙂 Every couple days they would have us scrape, dust and paint the outside staircase walls. Aside from that we spent time sitting around. I mean they would invite us to children’s ministry, but not to do anything, just to simply be there. Well, I take that back, we sang 2 songs in English at a ministry event.
Needless to say, this was a rough month for me. There was nothing to physically do, the pastor seemed to expect a team of painters and thus didn’t have much else in mind for us to do. It was especially hard coming out of Africa where we were expected to do everything!!!
On the plus side, we are staying in a house that is like a tree house! We are living in the Karen Hill Tribe community – which is not as rugged as it sounds- and the scenery is simply beautiful. Oddly enough, this is a tourist location, so we see many tourists and have many little shops down the road. We’ve gotten to watch women make scarves, shirts, bags, etc.
