Saturday July 2nd we loaded
our bus and headed towards Kitale at 8:30am. The country side of
Kenya is beautiful.
We were able to stop at a valley
lookout area, it was simply breath taking. A while later we were just
driving along when our driver pulls over to the side of the road. I
look out the window to my left and there, sitting on a rock is a
baboon:
We also got to a field of zebras while
we were driving to Kitale -it was pretty amazing! Unfortunately the
road conditions are absolutely horrible. The roads were super bumpy,
never ending pot holes and what made it worse were the horrible
suspensions on the bus. I mean there were times where I literally
thought that we were on a pogo stick or in a car with super wicked
hydraulics. I thought bouncing like that only happened in the movies!
Looking back I really wish I would have recorded it because it was
entertaining to keep flying out of our seats.
At 4:30pm we arrived at our
destination, a gas station in Kitale. Our contact did not arrive
until 6:30-ish. It rained and was rather chilly while we waited –
it is actually Winter in Kenya right now and thus it is primarily
jeans and t-shirt weather with a hoodie in the morning. This would be
perfect if A- I had jeans still and B-had a hoodie; nonetheless it is
beautiful weather and a nice change from the 90 degree weather we
have had thus far 🙂
So far, the most interesting part of
Africa are the bathrooms, I mean they make out houses look luxurious.
The bathrooms are literally a cement slab with a rectangular whole in
the floor. Usually you need to remember to bring your own toilet
paper and hand sanitizer because there is no running water. Lucky for
us, it is about a block walk to our bathroom: just like camping.
