There’s a lot we don’t know when it comes to the story of creation. We know the order that God spoke the earth and its creation into being. We know on the first day He created the light and dark/day and night and on the sixth day, He created man, His son Adam. One question I don’t know the answer to and have been wondering lately is what exactly did God do on the seventh day.

How does God rest? Does God read a good book curled up on His front porch? Or did He go out and play a round of golf? After listening to a Podcast (Jonathan David & Melissa Helser are incredible y’all) I got a brand new perspective on God’s Sabbath day. He spent the day with His son.

Imagine being Adam here. God your Father just created the entire world yet He chose to spend the day with you. He is that in awe and in love with you. Jonathan Helser said it was God coming home to His son saying “Hey kid, I took the whole day off tomorrow. It’s just me and you”. Like wow. That brought me to tears in my hammock in a Cambodian village because I can remember times my own parents told me “Delaney, I choose you. My work is not as important than you. You are my priority today”.

What did Adam do to deserve the attention from His father? Absolutely nothing.

Thousands of years later when John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River scripture reads;

“Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from the heaven ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased'” [Mark 1:10-11]

Now what had Jesus done to be pleasing to God? Absolutely nothing.

Jesus had not performed a single miracle. He had not raised a single person from the dead. Not a single person had been healed. All He was, was God’s son. And that was enough.

Well sure, that’s Adam and Jesus, they’re important to God so obviously they are pleasing to God. But so are you. You right now are pleasing to God. He take such delight in you. He calls you His beloved son or daughter. And what have you done to earn this? Absolutely nothing.

Because there is nothing we can do to earn His love for us. We are loved by God, the creator of the universe, by simply being not doing.

I don’t know if that brings comfort to anyone else, but it does to me. I feel like I can never do enough or do it well. I fail every day. I make plans to read my bible and listen to worship music and love well and do everything, but I am only human and I make mistakes. But just when I feel too low for God’s love to reach me, I remember His words to me. He delights in me. I bring Him great joy. And not because of my works but because of my being. My being of being His daughter. His child. An heiress with Jesus to His kingdom. And are you.

Let’s not forget what and who we were created to be, human beings not human doings.
