So way back in December before I launched in January I wrote a packing list of what I was taking…and said that I would write a recommended packing list..well as the time is coming for new squads to start launching in August, I thought I’d take the time now to write my recommended packing list…aspects of this list will only apply for females but guys you can take what you want and run with it too.
TIPS:
-
If you don’t wear it at home, odds are you aren’t going to wear it on the race. I don’t wear sandals or shoes at home much, but I brought a pair of both and a pair of flip-flops on the race, at this point, I only have 2 pairs of flip-flops and my hiking shoes for the days I need to do manual labor and flipflops aren’t practical.
-
PACK SIZES- the more space you have the more you will fill it, the more weight you will have to carry.
-
Bring one piece of clothing like a sweatshirt or something that is comfortable and reminds you have home, trust me it’s worth it. I have a sweatshirt, and a beanie that I brought that remind me of home. Also, after the wedding in the states I went to I brought a friends hat back on the race with me, best decision.
-
Odds are the Clothes you start with the race, will not finish the race. (at least not all of them)
-
Less is more…I know that seems odd, but with the community you’re about to embark on if you need something and you don’t have it odds are someone else will, and besides you can find most things in other countries.
-
Don’t worry about laundry, I’ve been able to do my laundry at least every other week since being on the race, if not every week. Just make sure that you have enough underwear to get through two weeks; everything else can be worn multiple times. (Trust me, I wore the same shirt for 4 days straight because of traveling and I survived 🙂 )
-
The FREE TABLE will become your best friend; you can drop and pick up items that you don’t need/forgot/or want along the way.
-
Toiletries- You can find what you need overseas, if I had to do it again, I’d just bring one of each and replace as needed. Also…Shampoo, body soap, and Conditioner you can buy as a team on team budget.
Gear:
-
Backpack- Deuter Act LITE 60+10 Backpack –I love my pack.
-
Daypack- Ozark Trail Brand I really like my day pack. – Just remember, if you have the space you’ll fill it. I have a 30liter day pack and wouldn’t recommend anything bigger, it holds my laptop, journal, travel toiletry kit, and a few other things just nicely.
-
Sleeping Bag- Big Agnus Encampment Sleeping Bag –1st month I’ve had to use it, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
-
Sleeping Pad- REI AirRail 1.5 Self-inflating Sleeping Pad-A pain to roll up quickly, but Comfortable.
-
Twin sheet- to use as a liner or to use if it gets too hot to use sleeping bag. I’ve had people tell me they wish they had brought one instead of a liner…just don’t bring a white one like I did, it won’t stay white.
-
Tent- REI Half Dome II- This is a hard one, you’re honestly not gonna use it every month. I’ve used mine twice; month one and again for one week in month six. That being said, if you decide you don’t want to bring it odds, are someone on your team will have one you can share.
-
Tent Footprint as well (tarp underneath)
-
Airporter- Osprey Pack Airporter (Large)
-
Travel Pillow- I miss having a full size pillow. If you bring a travel pillow, grab a large, the small one I have just doesn’t cut it.
-
Packing Cubes-
-
1 Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Quarter Cubes
-
for a toiletry bag in daypack (I ended up dumping my regular toiletry bag at the end of month six, and just used the one in my daypack…don’t regret the decision).
-
2 Eagle Creek Pack-It Cubes,.
-
1 for Tops
-
1 for Bottoms
-
3 Eagle Creek Pack-It Half Cubes
-
1 for underwear/socks
-
1 to hold pens/pencils/highlighters/etc.…in day pack
-
1 for tank tops/other undergarments
-
Sac- Medium- To use to hold cards/games in my day pack.
-
Compression Sacks-
-
1 L (Holds Tent, and Rain Tarp)- I brought 2 smaller ones, I just recommend going with the one bigger one and saving space.
-
1 L (Holds Sleeping Bag)
-
Travel Locks- Eagle Creek (2)
-
Headlamp- Trust me it’s worth it, especially in Africa.
Clothes:
Bottoms:
-
2 Skirts – Honestly, you can probably get away with just 1, but if you’re a girl who wears them a lot at home, bring them. Plan on 1 ankle length for Africa, and one Knee length for the rest of the world. I managed to get by in Cambodia without wearing one at all.
-
1 Pair Jeans- I know they are heavy; but if you wear them at home, you’re gonna want them on the race. I don’t regret bring mine with me at all…besides sometimes a pair of jeans is the only thing that makes you feel human.
-
1 Pair Athletic Pants/leggings long pants of some sort.
-
Swim Suit- I didn’t bring one, I just swim in a tank and shorts; but if you prefer the suit bring it.
-
4 shorts- These can also work as pj’s
-
2 longer pair
-
1 Running Pair
-
1 Just in case
Rain Jacket- Bring a lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker.
Sweatshirt
Belt- Bring it. If you’re a guy, fact is you’re probably gonna lose weight. If you’re a girl traditionally you gain… I’ve lost 50lbs on the race so far, my belt is probably one of the best things I’ve brought.
Work Gloves- Not Necessary, but worth it for the months you have manual labor. Plus they don’t usually take up much room in your bag.
Tops: Everyone is different. Bring what you will wear. I brought way too many clothes to begin with. Layers always work in the cold, and in the hot well you don’t need that many to begin with. Bring at least one nice shirt for the days where you end up preaching or want to look “human” out on the town, but for the most part, you’re gonna be able to wear the same shirt three days in a row and be okay. But as Jeff Tyner told us at our training camp, “You’re not homeless bums, you’re missionaries;” basically don’t do the whole smelly bum look all the time.

Undergarments:
-
14 Pairs of Underwear (plus 1 new package to open @halfway)-I got to go home in June for a wedding so I bought new underwear, but trust me that new underwear is worth it.
-
2-3 pairs of socks- Odds are you’re going to wear sandals most of the time, so socks are just a wasted space.
-
1 Regular Bra- Trust me girls, every once in awhile you want to feel like a real human, and a real bra will be nice to have.
-
5 Sports Bras
Hats:
-
1 Baseball Hat
-
1 Beanies
Shoes:
-
Bring what you will wear. I currently have 2 pairs of flip-flops, and a pair of hiking shoes, and I don’t regret it at all.
Toiletries:
-
Toiletry Bag- The North Face Base Camp Flat Dopp Kit – I dropped mine at the end of month 6, but if you think you need one bring one.

Depending on who you are will depend on what you bring. Shockingly I’ve used my Samsung Phone more than my actual camera, but I don’t regret bringing my camera either. I MISS my normal everyday laptop, but I don’t regret bringing the smaller one either. As far as headphones go, bring however many you think you need; you can buy more on the race though; that being said I’ve gone through like 10pairs, because I’m awful with headphones.
