Let’s rewind to three years ago… I was an insecure freshman, looking for any reason to escape the torture that I seemed to willingly join—college. At the beginning of my spring semester, I attended my first “Missions Conference,” which my school hosts each year. We had hundreds of missionaries and organizations in attendance, trying to recruit the next generation to go out on the field. I felt a slight tug on my heart that year, to which I attributed to “emotions.”

Fast forward to the next year…same tug, but without the clouding emotions. Fast forward to my junior year…even stronger tug, which led me to consider dropping out of college. The plea for willing Christians felt more urgent than ever because people around the world were dying without knowledge about Jesus …and here I am …reading “feel-good” books about Jesus, studying for my next exam, probably sipping some sort of coffee, feeling all too comfortable.

So why not drop out? Thankfully, God had been speaking to me through close family & friends, showing me that I needed to finish what I started and that He was preparing me for what was coming next.

But this year, at my last and final conference, it was different…I no longer felt that tug, because in a way, I was already there. No more tugging necessary. I was prepared, willing and ready to follow through with what Christ has called me to.

God managed to keep me in college all four years (which seems like a miracle in itself) and led me to commit the next year of my life to missions after graduation in a few months. The decision was easy enough, I just had to be patient enough to let the opportunity come.

Throughout these four years, God has taught me much, but during my last Missions Conference, He showed me that God changes the world through—

  1. Ordinary people
  2. Filled with the Spirit
  3. Willing to suffer
  4. Convinced of the worthiness of Jesus

Martin Luther once said that it wouldn’t matter if Jesus has died a thousand times if no one ever heard about it. Here’s to more people hearing.
