I. AM. WORTHY. AND. VALUED.

For a large part of my life, I have suffered a spiritual identity crisis and been believed into thinking that I was not worth it. I was not valued. I internally determined my worth by comparing to those around me. I have been continuously led into believing that I’m not good enough or I’m not worth it to experience blessings from God or others because I can’t measure up to the abilities, intelligence, wealth or status of people around me.

It’s time for me to start believing and living out the truth. My worth is found in Jesus Christ! It is not found in performance, appearance or being in the know about the latest and greatest media aspects that this world has to offer. It is by the grace of God, I am what I am (1 Corinthians 15:10) today.

In Romans 12, Paul offered an antidote to help defeat this lie: to see ourselves not as we stack up to others, or as others evaluate us, but as God sees us. Viewing our value and worth through God’s eyes portrays a different view than what we see when looking through our own lenses. “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29-31). In my own human mentality, a sparrow seems rather small and insignificant, but yet God cares so much about His creation (in this case, even the sparrows), that not even one sparrow will die and fall to the ground without Him noticing. If God cares so much for the sparrows that have no soul, how much more does He value and care for you and I!

Jesus would have gone through the agony on the cross at Calvary, even for just a single soul to become saved and welcomed into His Kingdom forever. Seeing my significance in light of what Jesus went through on Calvary to save me is essential in understanding my true value and worth in this world. God tells us in Isaiah 13 that He will make man more precious than fine gold … and really, the price that was paid on the cross is more precious than gold could ever buy.

Jesus became a man and walked on this earth many years ago, but was then crucified by the hands of people who God created. His crucifixion shows just how much He loves and values me, so much so, that He wanted to save me from my sins! Satisfaction from knowing that I am worth it and I am valued can truly only come from the light reflected on the cross at Calvary through Jesus Christ.
