Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!!!
Psalm 34:8

Seek his presence continually
Psalm 105:4

These are some of the funnest commands in scripture and the most satisfying. They sound more like an invitation to an experience more than a command. Over the last four years of my life there has been a slow but significant paradigm shift in my life.

For years I thought the best way to know God was to read and memorize the bible. Don’t get me wrong, I think this is still an incredible path to knowing what God is like and what He does. But I’ve come to realize the importance of actually experiencing the things the bible talks about.

God is real and He wants to have a relationship with us. He wants us to experience Him. I remember the first time I ever really experienced God. It was in grade nine at a bible quiz meet and I was just sitting in the back during worship, worshipping God. And He felt so close it felt so good to have Him near. I just wanted to cry because I never felt God that way before.

Then I remember the first summer I did Street Invaders I was going into grade 12. During the week-long boot camp every night we would have long times of worship where God’s presence would be really strong. And I remember so powerfully that Thursday night I was kneeling down and closing my eyes so thankful for Him. And I looked up with my eyes still closed and I saw Jesus or imagined him and His arms were open wide towards me and He was smiling and he just said “David, I love you”. I don’t think I’ve ever been the same since.

God is so good, he wants us to know Him. He even invites us

”Draw near to me and I will draw near to you” James 4:8

I think that’s one of my favourite promises in the bible. When I don’t feel Him, I don’t know what to do I find comfort that I just need to draw near to him and He will come. We don’t have to perform or act really spiritual. He knows exactly where we are at, He just wants us to be honest and be still and just surrender to His love.
