For my first 2 years of college I attended McCook Community College. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My goal was to graduate from there and maybe open a store and sell motorcycles and scooters. Stay in my hometown McCook and never leave. This was a cool dream, but lame. I also had this plan to move to Lincoln, work in the Kawasaki motorcycle plant and make motorcycles. This would be cool! I searched for apartments and located all the Goodwill stores I could shop at! This plan had me get out of my hometown at least but still wasn’t very cool. Great dreams I planned!
When I was young my family went to an Air show in Omaha. This was amazing, seeing all the airplanes fly and being able to touch them. Seeing Kirby Chambliss the Red Bull Aerobatics pilot was the highlight. This was absolutely amazing! He made maneuvers that hit 10 G-forces! He flew upside down just above the ground, and stalled out and let his plane tumble down before recovering it. I always had this dream of becoming a pilot, but I never really let anyone know about it. I looked into schools but they were all across the country, and many hours from home. Plus they were extremely expensive and there was no way I wanted to get into that much debt! That dream slowly died.
Instead I followed what everyone else in my family did. Go to the University of Nebraska at Kearney and get a bachelor’s degree. I graduated, “Yay.” Unlike the rest of my family, I didn’t get a full-time job when I graduated. I left town and worked at a church camp in Laramie, WY called Table in the Wilderness. AMAZING summer! After summer I moved back to Kearney. Time to “settle” down and get a full time job. I got a job at a clothing distribution center. I met a lot of amazing people but the saying we had there was “(company name insert) where dreams go to die.” After 8 or so months of hating my life with nothing to look forward to I gave them my 2 weeks notice and walked out. I then found a job at Caribou Coffee to fulfill my financial obligations.
I was asked once if I won the lottery what would I do. I responded, “I would get my pilot’s license, buy a plane, and travel the world. I would start a non-profit organization and I would drop food and supplies off to those that need it.” But of course no one wins the lottery and I would never win because I never play. So there goes my “lottery dream.”
I have attended the Passion Conference for the last 4 years. Each year it has been a major high light and something to look forward to. Each year they have organizations you can financially support to help others around the world, showing videos of places around the world that will benefit from what is donated. I always thought how amazing it would be to travel to another country. “But I can’t do that, I need to get a job and make money” is what I always thought. Every year I left passion I couldn’t wait to get back the next year, encouraged to get out there and “do something now.” I always had the pull to visit another country but never searched it out. This year on the 3rd day of passion I got a call. I think it was from Kacie, our team mobilizer spokesperson. I was accepted to go on the WORLD RACE!!!! That weight was lifted off my chest. I am doing something NOW!!! For the 1st time in 4 years of attending Passion I felt content in leaving, for I knew I was doing what God has called me to do!
Do I still wish I had a Pilot’s license? Yes, but I wouldn’t want to have missed out on my life and community found in Kearney. God owns the lottery. He says you don’t have to play to win. For I have won the lottery! I am getting in a plane and flying around the world. I am sharing God’s love and helping others, without the stress of being the pilot. I don't need millions of dollars to achieve my dream anymore.
Dreams come true if you let God make them for you! Who knows, maybe I will become a pilot later on? If you have a passion for something, go for it!
Philippians 2:13- for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
RED BULL GIVES YOU WINGS!
