“My house is your house, my belongings are
your belongings but my wife is my wife”
Felix, 26
At the beginning of this
month, when we met Pastor Manuel at his house, along with his two sons…there
was another guy that hung out with us too. From what I understood, he was a good friend of Manuel’s
son, Joshua, 25, who passed away at the end of December. His English was not that great, he said
he wants to be a gospel singer in America someday…yet he isn’t always on tune
but his smile lights up a room.
To be honest, it was not
the easiest of months. The humble,
visionary Pastor Manuel became more distant and preoccupied (for good reason)
with his wedding on Jan. 31. Our
translator wasn’t available all the days we needed him, and when he was there,
he didn’t translate everything we said.
On top of that, our team was just trying to get to know each other, make
this overseas living, up-in-the-air schedule doable….and this is just the first
of 11 countries!
Felix was the big spot of
bright light looking back on this month.
When he would come around with us going door-to-door, he would preach
the gospel with such love and power, how could they say no. After explaining the basics of who
Christ is and what he did to bring us back into a relationship with God, he
would ask these rural Dominicans, “So, what do you think….Pray?” The family that accepted Christ
Our day at the beach, as a Squad, with Felix
On our last day of
ministry, we had a “Thank you” party for Felix. He loves chocolate milk, we
burned some CD’s of reggae, hip-hop, and Grits & Lecrae (Christian music),
and wrote our thanks on a card. He
turned around and said that he would like to pray for each of us, individually,
in English and then Spanish. “Come
on Felix, we want to bless you!”
It is totally like him to serve us right back and give the glory to
God. I know I will miss Felix
greatly. He influenced us and we
influenced him in more ways than we’ll ever know.
