as of today, i’m a youth pastor in a church in connecticut. sometimes it’s the best job in the world…other times it’s the most painful.
two weeks ago, finishing a summer mission trip with a group of students, i sat with a girl from our group at a church we’d never been to before. it was a small church. it was way more ornate than the church we spend the majority of our sundays in. having about ten minutes before the church service began, i leaned over to her and asked her, “if you were given the job to start a church, what would that church look like.”
she looked at me and brushed off my question. “i’m not in that position,” she said. i thought i had been blown off, but after about five minutes, she turned back to me. “i’ve got an answer. i think the church needs to have a building, or at least some place for people to meet. there needs to be people – people who love Jesus. we’d need a Bible. we’d pray…a lot…but that’s all…keep it simple and keep it about Jesus.“
she’s a pretty remarkable girl, and it was a pretty great way to start a church service, remembering that it’s all about Jesus.
(that day, it was the best job in the world!)
