Life in El Salvador has been quite nice. I thought by now that we might have settled into something resembling a pattern, but we have had so much variety in our ministry, that this has not been the case. Things have rarely gone according to plan, which has made things even more exciting.
First of all, we were told we were going to have a construction project, but it turned into more of a demolition project, as we have been asked to clear a field for the children of the local community to play in. I will post a picture of our progress next week.
Teaching English has also been interesting, and very varied. I mentioned last week that we were working on conversational skills with some older students and some colors and numbers with some younger students. This week, I worked with our translators. I told them my testimony, and they practiced translating it into Spanish, and asked about any words they didn’t know.
I also mentioned last week that I was going to preach the next day. God blessed me and that went well. I taught about God’s plan for His people through the story of Gideon in Judges 6. I will most likely use this sermon many times throughout the World Race, but I probably get to preach one more time before I leave El Salvador, so I can’t wait until the Holy Spirit tells me what to talk about next time.
Last week we also visited a local ministry that ministers to prostitutes. We visited a couple of brothels and invited the ladies there to come eat the free pupusas that we were handing out. (If you don’t know what a pupusa is, I’m posting another blog in the near future where I will gladly enlighten you). They didn’t actually show up, but lots of young men did (As a young man myself, I must admit I saw this coming. Free food is pretty irresistible). While they ate, my teammate Rachel and I were able to have a really interesting conversation with them in their own language. I am still not fluent in Spanish by any means, but I’ve been honing my skills and learning new words here, and having a full (albeit limited) conversation in Spanish was really exciting for me!
In addition, we have also found occasion to perform a drama, do two crazy dances, and lead worship. So basically, my team has learned to be flexible, and we wear a lot of hats. But I really enjoy the variety and the chance to minister to many different people in many different ways.
