"We minister to the broken, the ones thrown away, abused. Our children's home is for girls pregnant by incest and rape and also for special needs children dying of starvation and lack of medical care. We rescue victims of violence… women, children, elderly, disabled… victims of abuse, rape, incest, murder, kidnapping, sex trafficking and child prostitution, and more."
Lee and Gracie are two ordinary, but incredible missionaries with two very different stories. Together they run their mission, Heart of Christ, taking in kids in Honduras who no one else will take. Both are people of incredible humility, who have deep intimacy with and hunger for God.
Heart of Christ is a beautiful, unique family.
3 teenage girls – who have been raped, abused and more
3 babies – who are products of the girls' rape
3 toddler boys – who have been abandoned by their young mothers
3 girls with cerebral palsy – recovering from severe abusive malnourishment.
To complete to picture there are Gracie and Lee, taking care of their family with the help of the Honduran staff.
Our role there was to be extra sets of hands and feet for the staff. We played with the toddlers, cared for the cerebral palsy girls, and babysat the babies while their moms were in school, and helped lay blocks to construct a second floor.
This mission comes with many stories, of both horror and joy. At a young age, one of the boys had a huge tumour on his side, nearly as big as him. He could barely walk! After many complications and a TV news story, he was finally admitted to surgery in an illprepared, unhygenic, and unspecialized hospital. After a miraculously safe and successful surgical removal, the young boy weighed only 18 pounds. Before the surgery: 36 pounds.
In the 5 days at Heart of Christ l learned so much about love, peace and dependency on the Lord. During that surgery, (and other similar hospital visits) Gracie and Lee didn't let instinctual anxiety terrorize them. God is in control, so why worry? Easy to say, harder to practice.
I definitely left a piece of my heart there, I hope someday to go back and look for it. 😉
