“Donde esta tu mama?” we asked Yoslin, looking around for her mom.
“En el bano!” her mom called, walking out of the bathroom in a towel. She hugged us all, asked how we were, and left to change into her clothes.
Yoslin is a young girl in Bethel who lives with her mom and brother. Her father died just a year ago, leaving her mom, Veronica, to care for the 2 kids.
We brought Yoslin a birthday card and some cookies, then sat and visited, mostly with her mom. Veronica told us of her dream to build a church on the empty plot of land nearby, and how she trusts God will provide for it in His time. We prayed with her and chatted some more until some other locals came and left with 2 of my teammates. Shortly after 2 more teammates left to play in the rainstorm with Yoslin, and I stayed at the house with Veronica.
She quickly brought me inside to show me pictures of her husband. What she really meant was pictures of her entire family over the past 13 years. There were photos of her children at the completion of each school year, her son’s high school graduation, various birthdays and weddings, even her husband’s funeral.
Then her son began playing electric bass in the other room, and soon brought it out for me to play. Next a classical guitar, then an electric! We took turns playing songs the other didn’t know until he started singing La Unica Razon. He had led this song at a church service, and I remembered it because it’s so catchy.
He taught me the chords first, which is interesting because instead of saying chords C, D, E, they say Do, Rey, Me. Next the words, which I zealously wrote out before he told me it’s a youtube-able song. Then the 3 of us sang it over and over.
All too soon it was time to go. Another precious afternoon in Bethel!

Eres grande majestuoso
Eres fuerte, invencible
No hay nadie como Tu”
You are all powerful
You are greatly majestic
You are strong, invincible
There’s no one like You
