We walked into the chemotherapy room and immediately I saw her and knew there was something special about her. We talked to and prayed for each patient and finally made it around to her. Her name is Esperanza (Hope in Spanish). When I found out her name I felt the Holy Spirit tell me she needs My Hope. She began telling us about herself and her family. She has three children, the oldest nine years old. She takes public transportation for four hours to get to and from the hospital for her treatments. Her husband works long hours to try and make ends meet. Unless her oldest son is out of school, the other two children stay at home by themselves. We asked her what we could pray for her for and humbly she said she wants to get better so she can take care of her children because she doesn’t like for them to be alone. She began crying telling us this because she feels so guilty that she has cancer and she can’t take care of her children the way she needs to. We began praying for her health and family and that she would come to know the Hope of Jesus. Immediately after praying she began asking questions. She said she has always known about God but doesn’t have a relationship with Jesus. We shared with her and she told us she wanted what we had. She prayed to receive Christ that day.
Mario is another cancer patient we have gotten to know. He lost one of his legs to Osteosarcoma. His favorite thing to do is talk about his kids and watch soccer. He has two small children that he hasn’t seen in three months because he has been in the hospital recovering from his amputation. His sweet mom has stayed with him in the hospital the whole time. His prayer is that he gets home soon to see his family. Every time we visit him he talks about his kids and how much he misses them.
This is no coincidence that most of my time this month has been with cancer patients. This is my passion. I love listening to their stories. This is why I’m a Radiation Therapist. I love seeing past the cancer and getting to know the real person. My family has been ripped apart so many times from cancer and I hate it, but there is a reason why I still have this passion and God has placed me in the position this month to get me back into it. God has given me passion for these people because I know the Hope they need. I know The One who gives all hope and I’m in Radiation Therapy for that reason.
Isaiah 41:13- For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand and say to you: Do not fear I will help you.
This verse is important to me for many reasons, but this month it has made me realize this is the reason why I’m called to be a Radiation Therapist. I’m here to tell patients about The Comforter, The One who gives all hope, and tell them they have God holding them through it all.
