This month in Africa I’m beginning to learn what real
freedom is. It seems life is not about going to school, getting a degree and a
great job, getting married, buying a house, raising a few kids, retiring at 65,
and then dying in my sleep while still smiling. It’s actually not about me at
all.

Living free has nothing to do with rights. If you say your
life belongs to God then you, like me, have no rights either. So if you’re
truly giving your life to Christ, then he has every right to give and take away
anything from your life, because it’s his.

Life is about learning to be in the light. 1 John 1:7 says,
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with
one another and the blood of Jesus his son purifies us from all sin.” So don’t
you want to live in the light?

But what does it really mean to live in the light? Well, I’m
learning it’s not about gaining a beam of light that comes from heaven, but
more of giving everything to God and watching Christ work with what you’ve
given him. And there you will find true freedom. To remain free we still have
to live by rules, God’s rules.
