Wow a quick thought

First of all I love Cambodia. Being here and truly living with the people where our ministry is has brought some good revelations from God.

I think all too often when people (including myself) decide to go on mission trips we always say “I just want to help the people.” There isn’t anything inherently wrong with helping others but I think the way that phrase is used is not what Christ wants. I’ll explain why from a personal perspective.

Whenever I would “humbly” say “oh yeah I just really want to help people” I would get so prideful whenever people would praise me and say things like “wow you’re such a good person.”

I think as a cultural thing we view helping others as saving them. As like swooping in and helping solve all their problems because somehow we’re just sooo qualified. And then getting all buttered up when we receive all the affirmation. Affirmation is SO good but we have to be very sensitive and careful about how we receive it.

Obviously I didn’t have bad or prideful intentions going into to this trip. I truly did/do have a heart to serve. But before I was clouded with affirmation and an idea of the word “helping” translated into “saving.”

Here’s what God gave me.

Don’t go in to somewhere and be someone’s savior. Go get on a living level and be a servant. Be humble, be genuine, be kind.
