This is a question I don’t often ask, mostly because if I did I would ask it every single day. It was pretty much a normal day in the sense that there was never real a plan other than pray and ask God where He wanted us to go, and what He wanted us to do. It was our first month of ATL (ask the Lord) which mean no more scheduled ministry. We started out the day with our team bible study. Because of a great suggestion from one of my supporters, I was eager to dive into Acts. Officially back from our Singapore weekend I sat in my hostel in KL Malaysia praying. After a little while passing and not receiving anything, Emily asked if any of us wanted to go get food.
As we walked down our street we passed a Hindu temple while they were in the middle of one of their dance ceremonies. Once both of us had passed we exchanged looks and turned around to stand by the gate to see why there was a crowd forming inside the gates. While watching the ceremony unfold from outside the gate, we decided to get a closer look. I took my shoes off and brought them to the counter where I was greeted with not so much of a smile. The men at the counter exchanged looks and I asked how much it would be to hold them. After giving him the money he gave me a long place of cloth to rap around my waist to hide my legs. Emily and I took a lap around the temple, watching the intense dance they performed with much energy and interesting moves that took up over an hour for a god made of gold.
I picked a spot, sat and started praying for the people in the crowd, mesmerized by the dance moves of the performers, when all the sudden the dance ended and people began to separate. I began to get up when a man approached. He asked where we were from, what we were doing, and what had brought us to Malaysia. He asked if we were interested in learning about the temple and taking the tour. As we both talked to the man, we were not allowed to be open about the fact that our mission was traveling the world sharing the gospel. We were instructed by adventures in missions for our safety not to share the whole truth with the average person without building a relationship first. What we did share is that we were Christians and we wanted to know more about his religion and why we believed in what he believed.
The next few days we met with him and he showed us round KL. He shared about his dreams of wanting to be a tour guide and showed us a few temples as well as how to get around the city and find all the good deals on cheap food and good chai. He talked a lot about what he believes and answered questions that we had. In turn, we could share Jesus and what Jesus did for us and the contrast between the two. Though he didn’t come to know the Lord, God opened the door for him to have some truth spoken into his life.
I didn’t think my team and I would end up in a Hindu temple talking to a man of that faith about Jesus and yet He brought us there to build a relationship with that man. My month in Malaysia looked a lot different from the normal ministry I had been doing the first 3 months in Africa. God taught me to let go of the cookie cutter ideas of what I think ministry should look like. God would have brought someone else if my team and I hadn’t talked to that man. I fully believe that. God invites us to be a part of bringing kingdom. Even if we don’t answer that call, His will, will be done. He asks us to step up and be obey the call, whether that be going into the Hindu temple and loving on and praying for someone or teaching a Sunday school class. Whatever He’s calling you to do, do it. You won’t regret obeying Him, and God will bless your willingness.
I’m still in need of prayer and financial support. I have about 3,900 dollars to raise to stay here and continue to help bring kingdom around the world. Thank you for all the love you all have shown me.
