AMERICA!
The Land that I love!

It has been another year where I have not been in the US for the 4th of July.  However, this year I was blessed to celebrate it in Tanzania.

So how does a World Racer in Tanzania celebrate the 4th?  Well, let me tell you all about team #winning’s forth.

It began with the National Anthem, literally. My teammate Nate had the ASU band playing the National Anthem on his iPad while wearing red white and blue.  Great way to start your day.

We spent the morning singing patriot songs and talking about American food, traditions, and other American things.

As a team we decided to make an American meal for our contact so we hit the town in search of things to make our American meal… shopping in Tanzania is not like shopping in America.

We figured that we wanted to make Mac n’ Cheese, potato salad, and fried chicken… potato salad didn’t work out so we made baked beans instead.  When we went to buy the chicken, our contact took us to the market where there was a man who had a cage full of live birds… so for $12 we bought two chickens and took them home.

Once home, we killed our chickens, took the feathers off, cut them up, and fried them.  We made our Mac n’ Cheese, baked beans, and had dinner ready by 6… but Tanzanians don’t eat that early, so we waited a bit before we ate.

Before we ate, we sang our National Anthem to our host family and they loved it.  We ate our meal together and to our surprise our host family liked it!  After dinner we went to the back yard and taught our host family how to make smores.  Sometimes I forget that most people don’t know about our traditions… but they loved the smores and were asking for some more 😀

Our family had never seen fireworks before so we showed them the clip from the Sandlot when they played the night game… if that doesn’t make you miss America, I don’t know what will.

And we ended the night with poems that we wrote about America.  Here is the one I wrote:

A Poem For America

America, a land of dreams

Where anyone can make the team

The Land of “We can do it”

Cuz Americans don’t quit

America a land of choice

Where people can use their voice

Opportunities are everywhere

They practically fill the air

America, the land of the free

Where people died for this reality

Without those who gave their lives

The stars and strips wouldn’t fly

America, a land truly blessed

You could say it is the best

Thanks to all who fought for today

And God bless the U.S.A.

It was a great 4th of July and even though I wasn’t in America, I’m so glad that I was free to celebrate it.  God bless America and God bless the world, and the ones who don’t get to celebrate freedom.  America is so blessed, I don’t want to take that for granted.
