"Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free…"
                                                                – Galatians 5:1

God’s will is not a tight rope.

I often find myself torn between several really good options in life.  But I likewise find myself always worrying that maybe one of those decisions is going to completely throw off God’s divine providence for my life.

And that’s so silly of me.

If each individual decision, whether a good one or a bad one, permanently altered our path with God and His will for us, then frankly we would all be in deep trouble right now.

Fortunately, that’s not how our sovereign God works.

There’s lots of grace, forgiveness, and liberty!  While God is sovereign and knows what our whole life will look like, He has also given us the free will to make decisions.  He has entrusted us with an incredible amount of power to move whenever we feel led.  And sometimes we have many great options.  But we can’t fear that one or the other will doom us forever.

I’ll say it again: God’s will is not a tight rope.

One imperfect move is not going to send us toppling down forever.  His ultimate will is that we are obedient to Him and that as believers we desire to make disciples and share His story with the world.  And the reality is, there are many ways to do that.  And He may indeed have a specific idea in mind for you at this time and He may in fact display signs and wonders for you to discover what that is.  Yet for most of us, this is rarely the case.  For most of us, it’s a daily grind of making decisions and doing our best with what truth we know as of now.

And if we end up making a really bad decision, blatant disobedience perhaps, even then we still haven’t fallen off a tight rope!

This is where God’s grace and forgiveness comes in.  Sometimes we not only veer a little to the right or the left, but we instead turn around in the opposite direction we’re supposed to go.  And when we’re broken and God turns us around, it usually hurts a little, and sometimes shame can even haunt us for a while.  But it shouldn’t.  Because the cross says, “I’ll bear the shame.”  So no matter what happens, keep moving forward.  Yet don’t use His grace to keep doing as you please.  Rather use the freedom you’ve been given to honor Him.

That’s God’s will for your life.
