This is my team that I’ve gotten to spend the last three months of The Race with. Our team name is Por qué No?! because we wanted to be a team that pursued the Lord and pursued adventures with the boldness and freedom that comes when you just simply ask the question, “why not?!”
The picture featured ^^ is from an spontaneous trip to Guatemala City last night to go see a movie and just enjoy each other as a team. It was such a simple thing, going to the mall, grabbing lunch and swooning over Thor as he defeated another bad guy…girl..whatever. I mean, I do stuff like that back in the States all the time. But such a simple thing brought us so much joy and unity within our community. And all it took was us asking each other, “why not?!”. It was unplanned, getting later in the evening, and brought so much freedom.
This isn’t the first time this has happened on this team. Plenty of times that simple question has stopped us from stopping ourselves and the adventure God had for us. The first “why not?!” question I asked my team was, “Lets go boarding down a volcano! Why not?!”. AND WE DID. Boarding down a volcano was a crazy adventure, but more so than the memory of boarding, we met friends while doing it that led to further ministry in other countries. The Lord used that extreme adventure to connect us to other plans He had later on. If we hadn’t of gone boarding, we wouldn’t of had our time in Honduras. How crazy is that?! And all it took was asking that simple question.
The majority of time I ask myself this question is when it comes to talking to strangers on the street. A hesitation or excuse will form in my head, but then I ask myself, “why not go talk to that person?”. I never have a reason not to. Some of the coolest people I’ve met this year have been people I only spoke to once while walking down the road or through a market. It’s during these times I depend on the Lord to speak or guide my actions because I know time is limited. But, friends, He does. And it’s so cool!
So much freedom comes when you stop yourself from stopping yourself. Sometimes there really are reasons not to..that’s just your common sense kicking in. But so much of the time there really is no reason to not step out in boldness, or even just step out of the house, and enjoy life. Our Lord created joy. He wants us to have fun. And having fun doesn’t have to cost anything. It can look like going on a walk with friends and meeting new people or exploring a part of your city you’ve never seen. Or having a spontaneous dance party. It can even lead to holding a tiny Slow Loris in the middle of the market in Thailand. Literally whatever!
I plan on continuing to ask myself this question when I return home in 10 short days. I plan on keeping the adventure going and following the Lord in joy and freedom. It really is so cool and I pray you join me in asking the simple question, “Por qué No?!”
