My team and I have officially been in Honduras for about 2 weeks now. Honestly my first week here was hard to enjoy from the typical stress of adjust to a new location, losing a friend, hearing about the shooting & fires effecting my beloved California and feeling of heaviness of our new ministry. We’re working with Heart of Christ which is an organization that fights for the justice and safety of women and children who have been victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. They house multiple children and provide refuge for those fleeing from violent situations. There are so many devastating stories about how some the children they house have ended up here. Stories of being abused, raped or sold by family members is common theme throughout the lives of these children.

A few days ago when I was helping to prepare food for the children while the rest of my team was evangelizing, I began to feel like I wasn’t doing enough. Don’t get me wrong, I love cooking but in that moment I felt like I was doing a menial task while my teammates are out building the kingdom. The Lord checked me and helped me to realize the importance of having these skills. Our main ministry is serving the children this month and helping to prepare their meals is an important part of that. A lot of times domestic skills or roles like being a stay at home mother are deemed irrelevant or looked down upon. When people think of a missionary they typically envision evangelizing, working in a church or building something, not cooking meals.

He continued to question me about the people who work with the children like the women who cook in the kitchen, women who bathe them and those who teach them. Are they not playing a part in building kingdom through “training up these children in a way that they will not depart”(Proverbs 22:6)? These women play an integral part in the lives of these children and by me thinking that just cooking in the kitchen is not making an impact it devalues the ministry that God has granted them with. The sad reality is that some of these children may never return back to their biological parents yet through this ministry they have been granted the opportunity to be raised by the incredible staff here.

Family should always be our first ministry before any work in a church, organization or job. Seeing how all of the children have been affected by not having a good family life, it makes me want to fight even harder to improving my cooking skills, childcare ability, and overall home economics skills to provide the best Christ-loving home for my future family. It all starts with family! Family is the the foundation of the community, community is the foundation of the state and states are the foundation of the nation.
