Just like hollywood glamorizes things, most videos of The Race glamorize it.
Truth is, not every day is rainbows and sunshine.
Some days race life means:
being shoved into a ran with 20 other strangers to take an hour and a half ride to do ministry that last an hour.
going a full week without a shower because you don’t have water
wearing the same clothes an entire week, because again, you have no water
getting sunburnt everyday due to malaria meds
waiting in a long bathroom line because there is only one toilet in a house with 16 people
getting Giardia while living in a jungle
traveling on a bus for 3 days straight (hope you’re comfy!)
sleeping overnight with Listerine in your hair to get rid of lice
tears, lots of tears
eating cheap noodles because that is as good as the food budget gets
the Lord telling you No to going on adventures
sleeping on a concrete floor for a month (because you gave away your sleeping pad 6 months ago)
learning a new lesson in vulnerability (like bathroom doors that are glass)
telling your testimony 100 times
rationing what water is left in your Nalgene
sitting and waiting for five hours because you are not priority to others
breaking down in the middle of the night in the jungle and someone saying “we might be sleeping in the car tonight”
spiders, giant spiders
snakes (India)
smelling yourself
smelling your clothes
smelling each other because you don’t know what really smells bad but something does
you being a spectacle in every country you go to just because you are white
rice, rice, baby…everyday
constantly dirty feet
conflict
confrontation
getting comfortable getting uncomfortable
being allergic to the very water you need to bath with
having dirty, brown water become your shower water
bucket showers, lots of bucket showers
and this is the short list of things.
but, IT IS ALL WORTH IT!
