For the majority of life I have had long fingernails. More so out of sheer laziness. I don’t like trimming the nails I have been given, nor do I enjoy the way a nail file feels.

Last Monday I was agitated as a result of having long finger nails. I had a hangnail, an ever so aggravating hangnail. The majority of the focus that I had was placed on that annoying nail throughout the day.

At the time, we were in Greece and everyone whom I asked nobody seemed to have nail clippers. What a convenient time to get a hangnail. I went three days with that irksome hangnail continuing to frustrate me.

Yes, I went three days being disgruntled about a hangnail. How ridiculous was I? How petty was that inward complaint?

Don’t worry though, that hangnail is now gone. That hangnail taught me a lesson too. Funny how the Lord works sometimes.

I was walking back to the room our last night in Greece and as I was walking I was focusing on that wonderful hangnail. Then that still small voice says, “you should focus on me more than you are focusing on that.”

How true is that! Talk about “hangnails,” Jesus hung from nails for us. God gave the ultimate sacrifice to send HIS son to die for US. I was hung up on a hangnail. Jesus was hung up on a cross. Jesus did that without complaint. Instead he said “father, forgive them they know not what they do.”

In the moment, I knew not what I was doing until the Lord corrected me. The Lord has endless grace and forgiveness for me though (for ALL of us). It reminded me how petty our complaints in life truly are. Don’t get hung up on the hangnails in life. Focus on the Lord instead. Glorify HIM.
