Oh, we’re half way there.
Oh, oh, living on a prayer
(Que Bon Jovi sing along)
Can you believe it? A week ago, my team and I celebrated our halfway point of the race with an ice cream cake. What I heard is true: the days are long, but the months are short, and time flies.
Huge shout out to everyone following and supporting me. Seriously. I definitely did not get here alone.
A lot has happened in these first 5 ½ months, and most of those stories haven’t made it into a blog. So, in honor of this momentous occasion, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite stories and moments.
- Day one of the world race: our host dropped us off at the genocide museum. Think floors with bloodstains and walls piled high with skulls.
- First adventure day: Deb and I went to Phenom Phen, and on our way back our tuk tuk driver got lost. At one point, he tried to drop us off in the city’s red light district. Ha. Ha. Don’t worry; we made it back safely.
- I tried fish cheese. It’s rotten fish that’s had all of the liquid squeezed out of it. I also tried snake on a stick, tarantula, and an unknown type of bug.
- I broke my pinky toe at the end of month 1.
- A few of my teammates and I rented moto bikes. It should come as no surprise, but I am terrible at driving them, and a giant truck almost mauled me over as we went down a mountain.
- I taught English… and Khmer
- I’ve played soccer more in the past few months than my entire life. The same goes for the number of kids I’ve held.
- I played the role of “boyfriend” in a skit
And the list goes on! Obviously, this isn’t a list of everything I’ve done, but as I continue on the second half of it, I wanted to think back to the first half. It hasn’t been easy, that’s for sure. Ministries, team dynamics, personal ish… it is all part of the journey.
Your prayers are always welcome, and if time keeps flying, I’ll be on American soil before I know it.
