So I have been at my ministry place, Covenant School of Worship, in the southern part of India for 3 days days now. It has been very interesting just to watch how life moves here. It seem so different than life back home. Here are a few things that I have notice are different so far:
1. When eating you eat with your right hand only and you use your hand to eat with, no utensils. You never use your left hand because that’s the hand you wipe your bum with.
2. They drive on the left side.
3. Yellow light means prepare to go, not slow down.
4. Food is spicy even when they say it’s not
5. The same rules of the road that are in Canada are not even close to what are here.
6. They use the horn on the vehicle a lot, pretty much if they want to communicate anything, like to turn, or moving over, or to tell someone to get out of the way, or when they go around corners, just to name a few.
The first day we are here we had orientation and went shopping to get Indian clothing, that was Saturday. Yesterday we went to church for worship then lead Sunday school for the children. We told a story and played games with the children. We had a group of children climb the fence to see what we were doing. One of the children joined us. I would ask if you would pray for that child, I don’t know his name but Jami, one of my team mates talked to him. She ask if he knew Jesus and he said yes and that he loves him. She ask if his parents know Jesus, he said that his mother is Christian but that his father is of another faith. Please pray that he will come back and that because of this there will be a difference in his parents.
Today was our day off. In the afternoon our team, and our squad leader, who is staying with us for this week, and another lady who works with AIM, who happens to be staying at the same place as us for this month, all went to Charminar. It is on old landmark in the city, I actually don’t know much about it, except that it’s beautiful, you can see far and lots if you climb up it,and that it might have been built in the 1300s or 300 years ago. While there we felt a bit like famous people as our pictures were taking over and over again. White people are not that common here. Outside our ministry I think I have seen maybe 2 other white people in this area. We walked around that area for a couple hours had some great Indian food, and few people did a little shopping. To get to and from this place we rode in a thing call “autos”. They are 3-wheeled motorcycles with a back seat and are covered. There are hundreds of these things. It’s like what taxis are in New York City. Once home some took a nap and others, like me, did our laundry. Hand washed and hung it to dry.
Before I finish here is a funny story from yesterday. A few of us went for a walk looking for a place that sold toilet paper. On the way to the store there was this dog sitting outside of another. One of my team mates, Becca, gave a piece of her food to the dog. The dog enjoy it, the dog followed us to the store and as we walked around a bit more. As we walk down this street Becca opened a small bag of dog food she had bought at the store for the dog and put it on the ground. The dog smelt the dog food, peed on it, looked at Becca and walked away. We laugh so hard. On the way back home we past the dog sitting back where we first found it, it looked like it was smiling at me and as Becca walked by it just turned it head the other way. I guess the dog like people food way better than dog food.
Please pray for my team as tomorrow we get back to ministry work and continue to help out around the centre.
I am having some issues getting pictures off my camera to my iPad to put on my blog, so one picture. As soon as I get them I’ll post them.
Until Next Time.
Thanks to my team mate for the photo.
