We had the honor of one of our squad leaders, Thomas come to stay with us for a week. During that week our team split into two teams to go to villages. We had Dave's team which consisted of Thomas, Channele and Taralah then we had Mickey's team which had Jordan, Jake and myself.
We left Thursday morning around 1pm and just my team which we like to call the Midwesterners. We rode a bus with the four of us and our translator Yona (think Yoda with a N) for 3-4 hours with people standing in the aisle getting all up in your personal space and women breastfeeding in your face (my poor brothers). It's tight and let's face it, horrible. I couldn't even see Mickey who was across the aisle from me. Crazy right?!
We arrive and meet the pastor and the family we'd be living with. (Pastor Abel and Isaac & his family) The next morning we have to call David to let him know that we made it safely. I go with Mickey, Yona and Abel and they told us that it's about 3km away. Not a big deal we can walk that. 3km turned into 3-4 miles, one way! We walk through the bush of Africa, through river beds and everything else you can think of. Did I mention I'm in a skirt? Haha and we didn't bring any water (smart right) and it's so so hot?
We come to this tree and they're like here it is. Oh wait you don't have this certain phone company we have to go to a different tree. LITERALLY A TREE WITH TWO ROCKS BY IT!! LOL and you know which phone company it is based on the trash on the ground haha. This is no joke! We can't find the tree we need so we stop and ask a Mossi Warrior who's riding a bicycle for directions! Mickey and I couldn't stop laughing at this point.
Our phone is too new to get service so we have to ask some guy who's at the tree to use his. The man has to point the phone in a certain direction, and put it on speaker because if you move the phone you'll lose service. We were so thankful that we were able to talk to David and that the trip wasn't a waste of time. Total our little adventure consisted of 8-10 miles of walking and 2 1/2 hours of talking! That was all before lunch 😉
Life in the bush of Africa 🙂
