We had quite an eventful second week at Jireh Childrens home.
Sunday we attended church, ate lunch at the home, rested awhile, and then took the bus to a gathering of 20-30 young people who get together and worship every sunday. The service is put on by a man in the area who started an orphanage very similar to Jireh. Brittani gave a message and the team led the children in a few songs. It was a long, fun day.
During the days of the week we didn’t have outings planned we would walk over to Jireh at 8:30am. We’d all start the day with devotions and singing. Afterwards we’d eat breakfast and spend the remainder of the morning teaching English and hanging out with the kids. After lunch we’d do bible study/ teaching for an hour or so, play some more, and usually rest a little while before dinner (which is typically eaten around 8 or 9pm). This week we were also blessed with a FANTASTIC rooftop barbeque! We invited team Rooted over, who are working with the YWAM base close by, and enjoyed roasted pork and chicken with all the fixins.
Tuesday we spent our day at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center a few blocks from our home. The center hosts around 20 adults with whom we spent the morning singing songs and sharing from the Word, and the afternoon eating lunch and making crafts. I also had a very interesting hour long conversation with one gentleman who was curious about all things American, but particularly concerned with fruits and vegetables…everything from costs to varieties to exactly how many green beans fit in a typical can. I failed miserably to satisfy his wonderings with my answers, but I made a pretty cool pen!
Friday we spent the morning with the children and in the afternoon hosted a medical camp. A team from South Korea came to Jireh Childrens Home and spent time with every child from the Home and surrounding community; giving them pills to kill worms, taking temperatures, and passing out healing medicines for all sorts of ailments. The children loved it because they got free cookies after their check-up, and we loved it because they drew henna designs on our hands while they waited their turn.
Saturday was our day of rest. At night we all gathered for worship and dinner, and a special goodbye for me. I have to go to Hyderabad early, along with the other squad leaders, to prepare for our U Squad month 5 debrief, and our hosts were gracious enough to make sure I felt missed:) I am sad to leave this place, especially earlier than the rest of the team, and will keep them in my prayers until (hopefully) I can make a return trip.
