Wow! I think this may have been the longest gap in between blog posting since I left on the Race. Oops.
This is partly because we’re at our ministry site pretty much all day, and then have team times and host families on top of that. Lots of being around people – having to interact with people – means that my brain is more tired than it’s been since Zambia (our other intensely people-focused month).
It’s also because I’m telling other people’s stories. Yay!
One of the things we’ve been able to do this month is a project for the Starfish Foundation‘s blog. Taking the Humans of New York posts that are always on Facebook as inspiration, we’re putting together a lineup of the Humans of Starfish.
I’ve gotten to conduct a lot of the interview for this over the past several days. We’ve done 15 so far, which seems like a lot until you consider that there are 80+ students here. Each interview tends to last about 5 minutes, then I spend between 10 and 20 minutes translating and transcribing the kids’ answers. (We also have Morgan taking and editing pictures and Haley formatting the responses into stories.)
Hopefully, I’ll be able to share a few of those stories with y’all soon, or you can wait for them to appear on the Starfish Foundation blog. I’m so excited for all these kids to have this platform to tell their stories and so proud at their responses. They’re the ones inspiring me!
Besides interviewing, this is a little bit of what we’ve been up to:
Filling up water balloons for our Carnaval celebrations!
Extracurricular day: watching the Drama Club (and Sports, Dance, Arts and Crafts, English, and Community Service clubs).
Feeding kittens bread and cheese!
Academic day: learning about debating as the kids prepare to have their own debates.
