Recently, I tested positive for Covid, which sent myself along with the rest of my squad into quarantine. They were confined to the house while I was confined to the master bedroom in order to minimize contact with others. This forced me to rely on everyone else to prepare my meals every single day. I was unable to even go make my own plate. It was difficult for me to not only take the best room in the house, but also being forced to receive help for an extended period time on something as basic as feeding myself. This led me to the place of realizing something that I know many of us struggle with whether or not we want to admit it; I don’t like asking for help!
It’s subtle of course. We don’t throw it out there all at once, rather it is something that slowly creeps up on us, especially after a year like this one! The troubles of life begin to pile up. The responsibilities of the day continue to grow and the list appears to be never ending. Eventually, this anxiety builds up until it is simply too much to handle on our own. The hard truth of it all for some of us is that God created mankind to be in community or relationship with each other! From the very beginning, He created woman to be with man and vice versa. In order to what? In order to HELP each other.
“The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”” (Genesis 2:18).
There are two incredible things that can be taken from this simple verse, and one hurdle that needs to be put to rest. The first is that God said it himself that man should not be alone. While there are certain activities that I would rather do by myself in order to not over-complicate things, it is obvious for anyone who has partaken in a cohesive team setting that two heads are much better than one. This can be said similarly for what God has planned for mankind. That we are more effective when we work together. More effective when we allow others to assist us!
The second point simultaneously goes along with the second hurdle. God made a helper, woman, for man. This verse is often seen as “woman must serve man in all things because God said so.” HAHA, NO! God had originally put all of the responsibility on man for what he had planned for the world and this section is simply stating that now he will have another to help him. Just as we are offered in group projects or team environments. Somebody else in your corner to lighten to the load. That is what woman is for man similarly as man is for woman. Both made to work together for the goodness that God created them for.
So, I don’t know who needs to hear it or if it is just me, but it is okay to ask for help. It is okay to accept help. And, it is okay to give help. Mankind was made to live together and help each other. Given that today is Election Day, this is more pertinent than most.
Lord, I ask for our hearts to be aligned with yours. I ask for us to come together as what we originated with, “a nation under God.” That we come together as one people for You above anything else in this world. I pray for safety and security tonight for everyone in and out of the polling booths and after the announcement of the outcome for this election. Bring your sovereignty upon us and show us your divine power. In your name I pray, Amen!
P.S. Don’t worry about the Covid. I am fine and out of quarantine now! 🙂
