When we came on this race, we knew it was a year of surrender. We knew we
would be living simple with less, we expected things to get lost maybe even
stolen, fire never crossed our minds.
group doing crafts with the kids, when the guys suddenly noticed smoke coming
from below. We opened the door to members of our group running in with their
hands full of personal belongings. They were screaming, “Its coming from
our kitchen, the houses are about to go up in flames.” We rushed outside
and ran down the hill, we watched as the banana grove near us went up in
flames. We were running into thick smoke, unaware of how bad it really was.
Andrew came running up with his pack on. The flames were coming from all sides,

was already black, covered in ash, it was hard to see inside and hard to
concentrate. There was little left to burn around us, so we left our stuff and
ran to fight the fire.

over our lives.
Immediately we went to work on the repairs. Chopping down trees, making fence
posts, digging holes, wrestling with the barbwire fence, chopping down the
burnt banana trees… and so on. Until the repairs were finished we were also
shoeing out the cows from the garden. All in a days work!
