Homeless World Cup: Manila to Paris

This month, I have the amazing privilege of working with a magazine called The Jeepney, which is the Philippines’ FIRST street paper. It’s a GREAT paper and even GREATER ministry! Hopefully with the help of a teammate, Alicia Hodges, we will have online subscriptions available soon! The company is in need of much help right now. They haven’t had enough funds to produce anything but a calendar in the last 6 months and this magazine is a great tool for reaching out to the homeless and impoverished. The vendors, the homeless of the Philippines, get HALF of the price, which is 100 pesos total (50 to The Jeepney & 50 to the vendor).

Speaking of the homeless, The Jeepney helps with something called the Homeless World Cup. There are over 1 BILLION homeless people on the earth today and the Homeless World Cup teams up to tackle homelessness by creating awareness and equipping homeless men to take a stance and make a living and if possible, own their own home.

“Everybody needs to wake up in the morning with a goal. The Homeless
World Cup brings this opportunity, to go training, to change your life.”
-Eric Cantona, Ambassador.

I have had the chance to meet and hang out with a number of the players from Team Philippines and these guys are INCREDIBLE!!! They have AMAZING stories and the best part is that The Jeepney has teamed up to disciple them and lead them to grow into Mighty Men of God, passionate men after the Heart of God!

Many of the men have been homeless since childhood, others, since their teens.

The other day, I met one of the guys, the smallest player on the team, named Paul. Paul said that he is so grateful that he doesn’t have to live the life that he used to, a life strung out on drugs and wandering. The Lord has delivered him from all of it and he hasn’t been back since!

Pictured above is Paul.

These men are full of talent and just need help getting connected (education is VERY scarce among the homeless) to places where they can use those talents, like most homeless men and women around the world.

Last night, one of the players, Tonie Mark, made one of the most amazing
dishes for The Jeepney staff
called menudo
(with pineapple, not liver). The staff said that Tonie Mark is a great cook! I tasted it
first hand! WOW!!!

Menudo

There have now been a total of three players from Team Philippines go semi-pro in soccer!

Over the past few days, I have been working on a promo banner for the Homeless World Cup (Team Philippines), which will be used to promote the team and help raise funds to head to Paris in 2011 for the World Cup. Below is the 6 foot by 3 foot banner!

Stay tuned for hopeful promo videos and other materials as well!

If you would like to support the Homeless World Cup (Team Philippines) or The Jeepney, please see their websites or contact me and we can set it up!

Be in prayer with us as we listen to what the Lord wants to do and watch Him work!
