This was probably the hardest thing to do while in Haiti. We had a crate of 1000 bags filled with pasta. We drove to Canaan after a day of work and gave them out. Here’s the deal, we hate to just give handouts because the people are already in the “give me”/poverty mind-set and we want them to realize that it is God that provides their food, their water, their every breath, it doen’t come from an American…. We want them to understand that when there is a need, you take that need to the throne of the King of Kings because we truly believe that Papa hears our prayers and answers them! We also hate to simply give out tracts (I am of course more relational and believe that the Gospel is as well… I mean, look at Jesus….) but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. There was a need and we wanted to meet that need. The whole time, I was telling the people in my best Creole, “In the name of Jesus you eat. In the name of Jesus you eat. Not in our name. You drink this water in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus.” You see, no matter how we felt, no matter how great the need nor how many people went hungry, God provided food for 1000 people that day. Our God is a good God and He cares for these people. He loves them as much as He loves us. I wanna see these people walk in the truth that God IS our provider, that He is the source of every breath and heart beat. These people are hungry for satisfaction and they go to voodoo. They go to catholicism, which is mixed with voodoo here. There is mass chaos and confusion among these people. Even when we had no food left, they were literally crawling over each other to get the rest of the tracts. They are HUNGRY. The pastor that we saw in the tent city of Canaan begged, literally BEGGED Mr. Heady, “Come back! Please come back! We don’t care if you have food, we want Jesus. Do a crusade, bring the film (Jesus film), we need help, we need spiritual help so bad. PLEASE COME BACK!” There is such a great need in Haiti.
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful
but the workers are few.'” Mark 9:37
There was a little old man that was clearly hungry and malnourished begging me for a bag of something. I had to tell him that we were all out and that I was sorry. I wish I had more to give him. I said a few more things to him in Creole. He was very understanding and joyful even though he didn’t get anything to eat. It is wonderful, the joy that comes to a lil old man’s face when you say, “We come in the name of Jesus.” When the presence of the Lord comes, there is joy. What do you have to be thankful for?
I would like to write more but I am running out of time here in the airport. Please read over this a time or two, watch the video and pray your heart out for these people and for workers. What are you gonna do about it?
