My team would walk through the doors to corridor of the hospital by 11 o'clock. Starting at this hour the hospital become a madhouse because visiting hours were only between 11am-12pm everyday. After this hour ended only one family member could stay with the children and the sick adults were left by themselves for the rest of the day.
Every time my team went to the hospital in Jutiapa, Guatemala, I always felt the same. We eventually learned not to bring backpacks or they would make us check them into lockers. We would always walk down the long hallways until we reached the children's wing. The team would split up into two or three groups depending on how many translators we had and then we would be off.
Each team would separately go up to families asking if we could pray for their sick child and family. Most of them would always answer with a 'yes' but it was almost like they were agreeing so that we would leave them alone. I tried to place myself in their shoes and realized that this happens to them everytime their child is in this 3rd world hospital. People like me show up… pray… ask them a question or two…. and leave. At that moment I knew that God was getting my attention to show me that I had to be intentional in relying on Him if any miracles were going to happen….
Dun Dun Dun (sound effect)
Okay… well no miracle happened however Jesus did show me that their was a reason I went. He wanted me to see how He brings light into dark places. As I was walking outside to the playground, I met a man holding his daughter. Through the translator I started asking him questions. He was euthastic and was ready to answer any questions that I had! I went on to ask if my group could pray for his sick baby and he said 'no'. She has already been healed because his church has been praying for her. I initial thought was really…. and then it switched to Woah, he is a man of great faith. He already knows that Jesus is watching over her daughter! Melanie on my team then said is there anything else we can pray for. He said, 'hmmm…. yes please can we pray for every child sick in the hospital to be healed'. Everybody at one time prayed together out loud some in English and others in Spanish. Even though I do not know of anybody being healed, I do not doubt that God used that moment. I mean if this man's daughter could be healed from her bronchitis in one day, what else did God do through the faith that was produced that day.
