If you want to know what I’m going into this month, then I
have a book to commend to you.
Always
Enough is about the remarkable ministry of Heidi and Rolland Baker,
long-time missionaries to
Mozambique.
They have been at the forefront of revival
and ministry among the poorest people in the world since the late 1990’s.
Mozambique
is the 4th poorest nation in the world.
They endured nearly 25 years of bloody civil
war followed by devastating natural disasters (the 2nd major flood
in 7 years followed by the Cyclone just two months ago).
The poverty and devastation has left the
country with no where to go but to Jesus.
Perhaps one of the worlds great Revivals is today spreading throughout
the country.
We are very blessed to be a
part of it.
Squad A will stay in the
Indian Ocean
town of
Vilanculos.
It is one of the Marlin/Barracuda Fishing
Capitals of the World.
Rumor has it that
our host also owns a charter boat!!!
Vilanculos was recently struck by a Category 4 Cyclone.
I anticipate seeing much of the same
destruction that I saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The big difference is that after Katrina
there were 10000 Lineman and unprecedented amounts of support that poured into
the affected area.
That has not been the
case in
Mozambique.
I also anticipate having very limited access to the internet
during our time in
Mozambique.
In fact, I’m probably not taking my computer
with me.
We plan to travel light… and
with limited items of value.
Despite
amazing works of God that are happening in the country we don’t want to invite
danger or thievery by flaunting our possessions.
We expect to eat what our hosts eat and with
the exception of hiding in our bug-proof tents at night . . . to live like they
live.
We have all begun our Malaria
medications.
We are going into a world where 2/3 of all children die
before the age of 5.
Almost all of those
deaths are preventable.
They die from
malnutrition and dysentery and malaria.
We are going into a world ravaged by AIDS.
We are going into a world where there might
not be many old men because of the Civil War that only ended in the
mid-90’s.
We are going into a world
where spiritual warfare is real; where witchdoctors cast’s spells and people
live in fear.
And we are going into a
world where Jesus loves and cares deeply for the people and where they are
responding in joy by the thousands.
Pray for us and pray for them.
And pray for
America.
Pray that we turn to God before He has to go
to such great lengths to get our attention.
We will be in
Mozambique
later this week until June 1 when we will go to
Swaziland
for two weeks of debriefing and training (and welcoming the June World Racers).
