I often look at my life and wonder, “Why I am so blessed?”

Why was I born in Japan, one of the richest and safest countries in the world?

Why have I been given such an amazing family that is overflowing with love for God and for each other?

Why can I go to such a good school that gives me an education and countless opportunities for my future?

Why have I been blessed with such a big house, good food, nice cars, clean water, constant access to internet, enough money to buy pretty much whatever I want, and so many other necessities that many people in the world can only dream of?

Why me?

I sometimes ask God why I am over here living my life without a care when almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.

I am convinced that this is not the way that it is supposed to be.

Our society is so full of disparities and inequalities, and it teaches us to just care for ourselves and to look out for “number one”.

Jesus has a very different opinion.

Jesus said, in Luke 12:38, that “from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

I have been given so much, which is why Jesus demands so much of me.
I have been entrusted with so much, which is why Jesus asks so much of me.

God has not blessed me so that I could just sit back and enjoy my comfortable life, pretending not to see the so many others in the world who are hurting.

Jesus has blessed me so that I can in turn bless others.

I have been given life, talents, money, and possessions, and it is my responsibility to give those things back to Jesus as I serve Him and His kingdom.

This is why I chose the World Race Gap Year.
This is why I go.

Luke 9:23 says, “Then Jesus said, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow me.'”

David Platt has a very interesting idea about this verse in his book, Counter Culture: “In a world where everything revolves around yourself- protect yourself, promote yourself, comfort yourself, and take care of yourself- Jesus says, ‘Crucify yourself. Put aside self-preservation in order to live for God’s glorification, no matter what that means for you in the culture around you.’”

God has called me, and all of us as Christians, to put aside our own wants and needs for the glory of God.

As I prepare to go on the World Race, my prayer is that I will deny myself, take up my cross, and follow Jesus each and every day. That I will look out for the needs of others and not turn a blind eye to the heartbroken and the hurting all around me.

So, why have I been so blessed? That I may bless others and bring glory to God in the process.
