On the streets of Chiang Mai, I’ve watched you. I’ve watched you quietly as I try to navigate the roads unnoticed. I’ve watched you apply makeup to get ready for the night. I’ve watched you squirm uncomfortably in the tight dresses you have on. And I’ve watched you self-consciously tug down on those short dresses every five seconds. I’ve watched you slap a man as he tried to grope you in front of your little boy. I’ve watched you as you try to get business by throwing yourself on men passing by.
Now I’ve watched you noticing me. I’ve watched you as you smiled at me. I smile. You smile. I smile. You look away. I look away. I look back. Even as you are playing pool with a man, you steal another look. We both smile. I wonder if you see something different as I look at you–well beyond the flesh. I wonder if you wonder. I wonder if you see the Holy Spirit.
“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” -Romans 8:6
So for the very few times in your life, I wonder if you begin to question the life you might already find content. I wonder if you see life and peace. I hope that you see life and peace. I pray that you see life and peace. For if words never pass between us, I pray that the presence of the Holy Spirit inside of me will radiate and awaken the Spirit inside of you. Will cause wonder. Will raise questions. Will bring hope. Will empower and bring life to you.
Love,
Cindy
