So it seems like recently there have been several posts on
the June 2010 Team blog page, or at least a general mindset, regarding doing
what we were created to do. I think God is really trying to reinforce that
message with me, because that was the topic at Clemson’s FCA last night. The
passage upon which the talk was based was I Kings 7:13-21, where a man named
Huran used his talents to serve both the earthly king, Solomon, who summoned
him, and we can infer that he served the heavenly King through using his
talents as well. The speaker, Shawn Wood, talked about how we are all artists
in some sense with the different talents God has given us. He said that “most
of us spend our entire lifetime trying to become great at things that we
weren’t created to be great at so that we can do things that we weren’t created
to do”…and therefore miss who and what God created us to be. And when we try to
become great at too many things rather than concentrating on one or a few
things that God designed and equipped us to do, spreading ourselves too thin,
we become great at nothing and mediocre at a lot. I found that to be a heavy
but sadly true truth. We are called to become great at something, to finish
what we start (sound familiar? See “What one gives birth to – he must sustain”
on the team blog page), to invest in things that last (particularly PEOPLE),
and to work for an audience of One. His challenging question was, what is one thing that God has uniquely
created you to do?
…and what are you doing with or about it? I personally
want to come to Jesus at the end of time and be like the servant who was given
talents (yes, I am a very literal person so this is a very concrete transition
for me) and invested them for his master’s benefit and was praised by the
master for his work and investment. I know God has uniquely gifted me with an
ability and talent to write and to encourage people, among other talents and
passions. Even though it is a love and passion of mine to write and encourage,
I was convicted that I am not investing in and developing that talent as I
could or should be. So while I am doing my best to finish well in school, I
think I also need to be writing more to exercise and develop this talent and
passion God has given me, as well as making a greater effort to reach out and
encourage people. So expect to see an increase in me writing on here, in an
effort to do and be all God created me to do and be. Now, I appreciate you
having read my thoughts here, and God may have gifted you with a passion for
reading…but my guess is that He has uniquely designed and gifted you in other
ways as well. So, whatcha gonna do about it?
