First country: Costa Rica. I’ve been here for now over a week and at times it feels like I’ve been here more than a month but many other times it feels like I just arrived. The land and people here have caught my attention and heart. My team and I are surrounded by beautiful mountains (some call them hills but these aren’t hills when you’re living right by a volcano). I crack up at the mixture of pine trees that I can find back home in Carolina and the bright palm trees that are actually from this Costa Rican dirt. Even though the language barrier is so difficult and above anything else all I want to do is talk to the locals, I still find so much joy in the little moments we share. A few days ago I made sure to get up earlier to catch Rosa in the kitchen (a very sweet and joyful lady who lives right by where we are staying) to ask her if she could show me how to make their coffee. May sound silly, but those 10 minutes allowed me to connect with her doing something she knew and during an early time of the day she enjoyed. These are just little things of Costa Rica that have caught my heart….and it’s only the beginning of the second week! There’s so much more to come and so much more I could tell you, but there’s time, like a year’s worth of time. So for now here are some fun facts/things you might want to know after arriving in Costa Rica.

The little town we’re in is Los Guido. Right outside of San Jose, it’s one of the poorest slums in the area.

The incredible foundation we’re working with is Christian Light Foundation. There website is CLFCostaRica.com – GO check it out!!

My team and I are helping out with construction, door to door friendly checkups, and VBS. (Their version of VBS is us going out to some of the worst areas of the slum and reaching kids right where they are. And the people who are leading the VBS and speaking to these kids are probably no more then 5-10 years older than them. Now that’s what I call disciples making disciples!)

Yesterday was our hottest day of 94 degrees. It’s January people.

We are getting spoiled where my team and I are staying. We have a kitchen and also get to keep our tents up the ENTIRE month without having to take them down every morning!! That’s World Race luxury folks.

I tasted fried plantains for the first time and I’m in love! Yes, I’m a little behind on different kinds of foods, but I’m getting there. (Mom and Azia, check ‘em out)

And here are some pictures for the visual one’s out there.

I love y’all!! Thank you for the continuous prayers and support!
