Have you ever seen a locust before? I don’t think I ever had before this past weekend. If I had, I had no idea what it was. So I was at a braai the other night (same thing as a BBQ or cookout), which by the way was the most fun I’ve had in years. And I was talking to one of the hosts.

Then all of a sudden I see something come out of nowhere and land on my leg. At first I thought it was a napkin that had blown off the table. But as I took a closer look, it was a mutant grasshopper looking critter. And it had a death grip on the leg of my pants. As I screamed like a seven year old girl, I was able to shake it off my leg after what felt like 5 minutes and leaped across the deck to get away from this dangerous creature that had landed on me.

After getting a safe distance away, I realized all conversations had ceased and all eyes were on me. It probably would have been a little embarrassing if I hadn’t thought this mutant creature was trying to permanently attach itself to me. One of the hosts came over and picked it up and put it on him! So now knowing that it was safe to come in for a closer look, I ventured forward. Come to find out this mutant grasshopper that was trying to attach itself to my leg was really a locust. And apparently they can’t hurt you, nor can they permanently attach their selves to you. (Good piece of information to know for the future.)

So if you ever see a giant mutant grasshopper fly out of nowhere, it might just be a locust.
