One of my favorite ministries so far on the Race has been teaching English. Teaching English is something that I have always wanted to do and I have looked at opportunities to do so abroad in the past, but nothing ever panned out.
This month I have gotten the opportunity to teach an Advanced English class here at YWAM and much to my surprise 2 monks have joined the class. I wanted to chat with monks in Thailand, but did not get the chance to so when I saw the monks I was excited. Culturally a woman is not supposed to touch a monk or really have direct association with one so at first I kept my distance, but they seemed to have a genuine interest in learning English and wanting to chat further.
Last Friday was a movie night that started at 3pm, but my class was accidentally told 5pm so the monks came after the movie was over and Katie and I got the chance to chat with them for about a hour. We found out why they became monks and the 10 meats that a monk can not eat, a little bit more about Buddhism, etc.
I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and the monks are actually quite open to learn about other religions.
I’m grateful for the chances that I have gotten to meet and get to know so many different people while on the Race. That is definitely one of the benefits of the Race because it’s hard to get the chance to meet such a vast array of people otherwise.
