All of our contacts
did not pray in English. Two of them could speak in English, but they never
prayed in English. I wanted to know what they prayed for people and how they
prayed for people. I wanted to understand the dynamics of deliverance (exorcism)
because it was something that had been so unfamiliar to me. Here’s what I
learned:
-Preparation is
crucial for deliverance. Gorretti informed me that sometimes in preparing for
deliverance she would pray and fast for 20 days before doing any of it. She
would pray for God’s strength and power as well as boldness when she is with
those in need of freedom. She had been praying and fasting while she was with
us as well. Rev. Henry had spent an entire week preparing before going on the
field with our team.
-Praise and worship
invites the presence of God. Evil spirits will manifest in people because evil
cannot stand before God’s presence.
-The power of the
Word – what I mean is the power of praying Scripture over people and ourselves.
When any of our contacts are doing deliverance, they follow the example of
Jesus from Matthew 4. When Jesus was being tempted by the devil, he would quote
the truth from the Scripture. In the same way, when we pray for people during
deliverance, we pray the words of God from the Bible because those are his
promises to us. Ex. Jeremiah 1: 17-19, Psalm 103:3-4, Matt. 18:18-20. Praying
Scripture whether it be for protection or any kind of help is powerful and
effective.
