Today I painted a picture at Redeemer church of a bird flying out from an ocean with a heart beneath the waters to represent the freedom that emerges through a life of love. My other teammates used their talents of singing, acting, public speaking, and creating videos to demonstrate what it means for them to be a follower of Christ and what it can become for those that will choose the same path to follow Jesus. One of the major gang leaders in the community we’ve been serving in showed up to that gathering. It was the second time he had ever step into a church. We had been building a relationship with him as we visited his home every day to pick up his kids for the program my team had put together.

After the gathering, he went up to one of my teammates and said that he understood why Christ came for him. He expressed his longing to surrender his gang life of fifteen years. His desire was not to be the leader of a gang, but to directly quote him, he said he wanted to “lead his family to an eternal salvation” and to turn his life around. He thanked my team for being willing to step foot into his house to develop that relationship with him because most people in the community live in fear of him and would have never done that. I was so happy that my team made visible the presence of the invisible God through our friendship with his family. I felt as if it was one small step for my team, but the implications are huge for the community and the kingdom. The desire for change is there, please pray that he will act on the desire that the Spirit has planted in his heart to become a follower of Christ.

Please pray for him, his family, and his potential to impact the gang community through his influence.

It’s one small step for this man, but his step will become that giant leap for mankind.
