my team has partnered with Rev. Henry, Rev. Elisabeth, Gorreti, Jackie, and
Robert from the Church of Uganda. We have mostly been helping out at crusades,
school visits, and home visits this month. We had taken off from Masindi and
have been traveling to some very remote places in Uganda including Butiaba,
Walukuba, Bugoigo, Kabolwa, Kisansya, and Wanseko. I was completely culture
shocked -not so much by the fact that we lived in huts among the people, but
more so to learn that 40% of people in that village were cannibals. One of the
reverends told me that of course they could eat us even if we were people of faith,
which is why we must pray for God’s protection. Less than a week ago, a teenager was sacrificed and his head had been chopped off and he was
left at the alter of a church. Although the murderer was never found, the
murderer’s only punishment was that he would be banned from that area. I was
casually informed as well that human sacrifice was not uncommon as witch
doctors will ask for a certain number of heads and private parts to perform their
rituals. Greedy individuals that believe in the witch doctor’s powers will
murder others and bring the desired parts in hope that the witch doctors can
bring them wealth. So there you have it, my team is living among cannibals,
witches, and much more which I won’t describe simply because it is even more unbelievable and taboo.
*The spiritualclimate at our first two villages have been very dark as every household that doesn’t follow Christ will practice Satanism or some form of witchcraft. There is
clear cut worship of either Christ or Satan. All of the contacts that we travel
with were experienced in carrying out crusades as well as exorcism (Thank goodness they were with us!). On our first day of home
visits, I went with Brook, Jordan, and Rev. Elisabeth and we prayed for a woman
named Mary who hasn’t been able to walk for the past seven years. She started
shaking and flailing her arms as if she was insane. Elisabeth said that we would need to
pray for her more at the crusade. During the crusade, they performed
deliverance (exorcism) on her and she began to speak in a different voice. Rev.
Henry told me that the evil spirit inside of her was talking about how the
cannibals wanted to eat Mary. She was delivered that day! Our prayer is for her
to have a strong community to support her because she is disabled and her
neighbors don’t care about her at all. I also got to preach that day and six
people came to Christ. (My teammates and I are rotating preaching as we have to
speak at least once a day for crusades.) This was just one of the first few day
of our many exciting days left in Uganda.
