What is the World Race?

Is this some sort of competition?

What are you
“racing” to do?

Why did you choose this?

                                                     Isn’t it a bit extreme
I mean, 11 months??

      Where exactly are you
going?

                                                               Aren’t you worried about finding
a job afterward?

First Things First
I would like to ask you
to take a leap of faith with me. That leap, whether fully understood or
not, should open your mind enough to understand the goodness of such an
unbelievable experience. Let go of your initial close-mindedness (if any) and
open your heart to this adventure across God’s kingdom and through the hearts
of 11 nations.

The World Race 5 Ws
WHO: Yours truly alongside about 50 others

WHAT: The World Race is an 11-month Christian mission trip to 11
different countries around the world through Adventures in Missions. The WR
challenges young adults to abandon a traditional lifestyle in exchange for a
dramatic paradigm shift. Through adventure, ministry, community, and
self-discovery, World Racers develop broken hearts that propel their hands to
act for God’s kingdom around the globe.
 The
World Race encourages young people to abandon their American comforts and
commit to a year-long discipleship program. Racers spend one month in each
location, working with local churches in the area to serve the needs of the
community. The “race” element can be misleading and does not refer to
how quickly we can convert unbelievers. Each of the teams races to each
location and starts each month with friendly competition; for example, in Peru,
they had to do a scavenger hunt around Lima. However, the vast majority of time
spent in each location is focused on ministry and service. With nothing but a
backpack, racers emulate what it means to “live simply”, traveling to
each country in hopes of discovering a faith that is authentic and vibrant.
World Racers depend on the hospitality and generosity of strangers, just as
Jesus instructed his followers to do in Matthew 10. World Racers are
transformed by this unique mission trip and in effect, become world-changers
themselves.

WHEN: October 1, 2010

WHERE: 11 out of the following 15 countries: Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru,
Bolivia, Cambodia, Thailand, China, Philippines, India, Pioneer Southeast Asia,
South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana, and Malawi.

WHY: Humans have a deep well of compassion
that has just barely been tapped. World Racers, have a strong desire to be
poured out onto the needs of the world. They yearn to understand God’s purpose.
The realization that the metaphor of a journey, especially a long one, fits the
traveling and searching that they’ve been doing their whole lives. What the WR
is offering is not just another typical mission trip. The World Race taps an
ancient human compulsion to take a spiritual pilgrimage. A whole new rite of
passage is waiting to be born and millions of young people are waiting to
respond.

Moreover, why am I
doing the World Race?

Most of you who know
me already know the answer and frankly, I am sure you expected it long before
my acceptance. However, I am certain that some of you- whether you are a new
friend, someone I just met on a plane, or a long distance relative- have no
clue as to why I would sacrifice a year of life, a space of time on my resume,
money, companionship of friends, comfort of family, material possessions, etc.,
to humbly serve humanity for 11 months.

you haven’t already, check out my BIO

Here is a bit more
about why I have chosen this as my life’s next journey…

God continues to reveal how His
glory and grace transcend certain troubles in my life. I know that each
stumbling block better equipped me to understand the brokenness of humanity. My
deep-rooted compassion for the needy, oppressed, and uninspired all stems from
a freedom by which only faith in Jesus has granted me. Without any
reservations, I promise my relentless dedication towards loving, sharing,
serving, praying and awakening to the redemptive power of the Holy Spirit.
I have
always aspired to make a difference in this world. Here is my chance…

“I
appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to
present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is
your spiritual worship. -Romans 12:1 NRSV
I am ready to:
  • Take up
    my cross and follow Jesus
  • Leave all
    material possessions behind
  • Continue
to seize the destiny God has for me
  • Freely
give since I have freely received
  • Be the
change I wish to see in the world

How YOU Can Help
Prayers. Prayers.
Prayers

The most necessary support we
will need are your prayers. I am certain there will be a time when my team is
in the middle of the African desert, covered in insects, exhausted from a day’s
work and think “What are we doing here?” However, I am even more
certain that the Lord will come through, and that your love will encourage us
along the way.

Financial Support

In order to participate I need to
raise $15,000. Wow. I know it sounds like a lot of money, but it covers all
necessary travel expenditures. The smallest amount counts. I have started this
process very early, so even if you were able to pledge say, $50/month until I
leave in October (7 months), I would only need 40 people on board to reach my
goal! This is just an example of a pledge/donation. All and any contribution is
tremendously appreciated.
